Simulator performance statistics

This project is now dormant.

The 1.7 update closed all open XML-RPC channels (note that neither the 1.5 nor 1.6 updates did this). I'm far too lazy go back and forth across the grid reactivating simstats objects for what is basically no benefit. As far as I know, Chromal's simstats graphing is still going; see the FAQ for a link. This page will remain up for historical interest.

(Questions?)

Note: Any times appearing on graphs are US Eastern Time, the One True Time Zone. Converting the times is left as an exercise for the reader.

Current server time is 7 September 2008, 16:10:11 EDT (GMT-0400).

Simulators are polled every five minutes. If an update hasn't been received for a sim within the past five minutes, that means the XML-RPC object in that sim isn't responding, which, in turn, means that the sim is probably down. Note, however, that some sims (you can see which ones by looking at their graphs) simply don't respond reliably. I'm not sure why this is, as brief visits to those sims don't show them to be particularly unreliable.

FAQ

(okay, no one's asked these questions yet, but...)

Q: How do I know this isn't actually doing something nefarious like land scanning?
A: You can take my word for it. If my word is not good enough, IM me (Gabriel Spinnaker) in-world and I'll give you a copy of the scripts to prove I'm not doing anything underhanded. (I only ask that you don't place them in your own objects, especially in sims that already have a collector, since that could cause problems.)

Q: Are you aware that Chromal Brodsky is already doing this?
A: I wasn't when I started, but I am now! However, my project is cooler, because, uh... it uses Ruby in the backend! And in SL, it looks like a satellite dish!

Q: Can I have the performance of (insert sim here) graphed?
A: Sure, if you have land there I that can put the data collector on. It takes the form of a small satellite dish (like you might get TV with) and is five prims (nine if you want the 'mounting arm' for added realism), though I can put the scripts in a single prim if you're low on prims. IM me if you're interested, or email gabespin(at)geekmafia(dot)net. (Of course, I have IMs delivered to my email anyway, so they're basically the same thing.)

Q: How long has this been going on?
A: Since around the afternoon of Saturday, August 28, 2004. That's when I got the graphing going, anyway. The code for the collectors in-world was written in the wee hours of that morning, and I banged out the scripts that grab and graph the data over that morning/afternoon.

Q: How frequently is the data gathered?
A: A sample is taken every five minutes. I may make it more or less frequent in the future as circumstances dictate.

Q: So, how's this all work?
A: It's held together with baling wire, chewing gum, and duct tape. The backend is written in Ruby, with the xmlrpc4r library for talking to the collectors in-world. The web interface you are currently looking at is written in PHP. Graphs are generated every five minutes, directly after the data collection process, by RRDtool. And the in-world data collector is written in LSL, obviously.

Q: Why are the sim names formatted like that?
A: That is their 'normalized' form (i.e., a form that is valid in an email address). The data collectors register their presence via email, which is why a normalized form is needed.

Q′: Why is there an underscore at the end of an otherwise normal sim name? (e.g. apukohai_)
A′: Because, for whatever reason, the Lindens put a space at the end of that sim's name when setting it up, and spaces (along with numerous other characters) get converted into underscores when normalized.
